Krul Devils Display

As so many shoppers go about preparing for a busy Christmas, many footballing eyes from Europe’s top clubs will now be looking towards Newcastle United’s Tim Krul.

Tim Krul - NetherlandsThe young Dutch international pulled out a string of top drawer saves yesterday vs Manchester United, helping Newcastle United to a 1-1 draw against the Red Devils and also making his opposite number David De Gea’s price tag seem even more absurd. When Javier Hernandez bundled over Wayne Rooney’s shot, many Toon fans felt this was another case of the Magpies rolling over and taking the beating they would normally have allowed happen against a top four team; yet this is a new Newcastle United. Alan Pardew’s men upped their game, the tempo and Hatem Ben Arfa proved a menace to the rocky Red Devils defence, eventually leading to Demba Ba slotting home a penalty in the 64th minute.

With Jonas being sent to the stands for a second bookable offence, Newcastle United’s defence rose to the occasion as wave after wave of attack battered their 18 yard box. Danny Simpson cleared off the line and Krul made Edwin Van der Sar proud, showing why he is regarded as one of the top young keepers in the Premier League. With four minutes of added time many felt that Manchester United would finish the job but similar to the pulsating Benfica game it was good but not good enough for Alex Ferguson’s men as they had a 94th minute goal ruled off side. Krul’s looping goal kick signalled the end of an enthralling ninety minutes that left the Magpies in fourth place moving into December with Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the rear view mirror.

The month ahead will really show how much this team is ready to give and how much more it needs to receive in both support and finances in January. With six games in the four weeks of December including Chelsea at home and Liverpool away, by the start of 2012 we will have a better idea of where this teams fortunes lie and where the fortunes of Mike Ashley will need to be spent.

  • Can somebody explain how Ben Arta gets a yellow but Rooney doesn’t get a red? Maybe the ref was making up for this mistake?
