Irelands Call, Answer or Voicemail?

As a football fan nothing can make you prouder than having your club players playing for your national team, however Stephen Ireland doesn’t conform to this exact rule or guideline.

Stephen Ireland SofaHis lies regarding his international availability and the excuses in relation to his non dead grannies funerals as well as his hair loss battling personal issues make Ireland an enigmatic and irritating player. His talent is of course recognisable having held his own for a sustained period of time in a Man City team of superstars yet his “spoilt brat” image is more to the fore than his football prowess. A falling out with Houllier at Aston Villa leaves him dumped on the doors of the Magpies nest having failed to play a single game with the season drawing to a close.

His appearance with Leon Best and Stevie Folan exposing his torso in a nightclub displays a lot of what is wrong with a 24 year old former wonder kid at a cross roads in his life and career. The question is, do we as a football club take a gamble? Reflect back to Luque, Kluivert and Viana, which didn’t pay off; if Ireland is willing to shape up and cop on, he should be taken on board albeit with a reduced salary and a stricter training regime.

The Newcastle of 2011/12 much be ruthless, and Barton, Tiote and Nolan are a midfield spine that are not going to deal with a player who fusses over the rims on his range rover or his six pack. Pardew needs to give the player a chance to prove his worth in the closing matches of the season and if lethargy is creeping in he should be shipped back to Villa rims or no rims.

Ireland’s recent desire to remain at Newcastle are of little significance coming from a player who is a habitual liar and may I use the term Diva loosely here. With Manchester United to come this weekend maybe Stephen Ireland should be given a run out and we will see can he answer the call or be left to voicemail.
